Mounting is the engineering
The panels are the easy part. On an island with sustained strong wind, the mounting system is a structural element and it is where installations succeed or fail.
- Fixed into structure, with the fixing points designed and sealed into the roof build-up rather than drilled through a finished terrace afterwards.
- Uplift is the governing load case, not downward load. A ballast-only system specified from a mainland catalogue is not appropriate on an exposed elevation here.
- Every roof penetration is a potential leak. Coordinating with the waterproofing — ideally installing the fixings as part of the roof build-up — is the difference between a dry roof and a callout. See waterproofing.
- Frames, clamps and fixings in stainless, because everything else streaks and seizes.
- Connectors and cable rated for UV and the environment, routed and clipped rather than left resting on the roof surface.
Dust, and the output nobody measures
Fine dust settles on everything here, and on a photovoltaic panel it costs output directly. A panel that has not been cleaned since installation is not performing as specified, and the loss is gradual enough to be invisible without monitoring.
Monitoring gets installed so the decline is visible, and the layout is designed for access — a panel array you cannot safely reach is a panel array that will not be cleaned. For larger installations that means planning access at design stage rather than hiring a ladder later.
Where the panels can go
Roof space on this island is contested. It is a terrace, a solar water heater location, a view, and in a designated settlement it is a controlled surface.
- In a protected settlement, visible panels are a compliance question. Siting behind parapets, on inland-facing slopes or on ancillary buildings is usually the route.
- Terrace roofs in active use compete for the same area. It is worth deciding early whether the roof is a terrace or a generator, because retrofitting either onto the other is expensive.
- Shading from adjacent buildings, parapets and — in dense settlements — the building above yours matters more than people expect on a stepped hillside.
- Ground or pergola mounting is sometimes the better answer, particularly where a pergola was wanted anyway.

Questions people actually ask
Is Santorini good for solar?
Very. The irradiance is high and the season is long. The constraints are practical — wind, dust, salt and settlement visibility rules — not solar.
Will panels blow off in a winter storm?
Not if the mounting is designed and fixed for local uplift. They do come off installations that were ballasted or fixed to a mainland specification, and that is a serious hazard, not just a loss of equipment.
How often do panels need cleaning here?
More often than a mainland installation, because of the dust. The honest answer for your site depends on exposure and season — which is why monitoring is worth having, so the decision is based on output rather than on a calendar.
Can I install panels on a house in a protected settlement?
Subject to visibility rules. Concealed siting behind a parapet or on a non-visible elevation is often possible. It needs checking before ordering equipment.
Should I add batteries?
For a property with a pool pump, several air conditioners and evening occupancy — which describes most rentals here — the case is much stronger than for a lightly used house. It depends on your load profile, and that is measurable rather than a matter of opinion.
